Dirt and grime can build up fast on a piece of heavy equipment and can sometimes result in parts malfunctioning or breaking down if the filth gets out of control. To avoid this, you’ll want to give your machinery a good scrub from time to time. To learn the basics of cleaning heavy machinery, as well as how often you’ll need to wash it, be sure to read our guide below.

The Cab

Before you start rinsing and scrubbing your machine, you’ll need to take a moment to give the cab of your equipment a little extra attention. Start by removing any trash or debris, before grabbing a vacuum or air pump and blowing away any dirt, dust, and sand that’s in the cab. Afterward, use a towel and disinfectant to wipe down the surfaces of your cab. Lastly, be sure to grab some glass cleaner and a cloth to take care of your windshield and windows.

The Body

Now that your cab is spic and span, you’ll want to grab your pressure washer and set to work on giving your equipment a thorough rinse. Do your best to remove stuck-on mud and debris, and have a scrub brush or scraper on hand in case you need to use a little elbow grease. Once your machine is sprayed down, grab your detergent and start scrubbing! Be sure to pay close attention to any problem areas your equipment may have, before once again grabbing the pressure washer and rinsing the machine down. Afterward, be sure to let your heavy equipment dry in the sun, to avoid any rust or mold from appearing.

When to Wash

Cleaning a piece of heavy machinery is no easy feat! Thankfully, you don't need to do it very often. If you’re working in extremely dusty or muddy conditions, you’ll want to give your machine a quick scrub to avoid any dangerous build-up. If you notice an excess of oil or debris stuck on your machine, or you plan on placing it in storage, you’ll also want to give your equipment a thorough wash to avoid any rust or corrosion forming.
